Spinal Adjustment Techniques

CHIROPRACTIC ADJUSTMENTS

There are 24 bones that protect the spinal cord. At times, these bones may lose their normal position or motion. When this occurs, the nerve tissue may become irritated.

There are actually hundreds of ways to adjust the spine. Dr. Pham is very experienced and well trained in the various methods to perform an adjustment and is very skilled at choosing the method that will benefit the patient the most.

After a thorough physical exam, Dr. Pham will determine if a spinal adjustment is needed. The goal is to correct spinal subluxation and return the bones to their normal position or motion.

The spinal adjustment emphasizes minimal force and gentle pressure. Few patients feel any sort of discomfort and should be pain free, but you may hear a popping sound. This popping noise is a result of tiny pockets of gas releasing and is completely normal. When the popping noise disappears, it is a sign that the flexibility is returning to the affected vertebrae.

One of the most common questions asked is what specifically does a spinal adjustment or manipulation do? From the latest scientific and neurological studies, subluxations or spinal fixations cause deafferentation to the nervous system from inhibition of the firing of mechanoreceptors located in the joints. A properly delivered spinal adjustment activates or puts pressure on these mechanoreceptors to increase afferentation thus allowing the brain and central nervous system to modulate and inhibit the nociceptive fibers responsible for the feeling of "pain".
